I use some products from EPI . First I sandblast the piece. For blackening I
use insta-blak 333 mixed in a 55 gallon drum. It lasts covered in the drum
for a long time. I put the piece in the solution for about 2 minutes. Take
it out and rinse with water and then pour E-Tec 522 (a water-based wax
emulsion) all over the piece. After rinsing do not let the piece dry before
the next step or it WILL rust. Blow off excess. Let dry and repeat the
E-Tec. Quite often between the the 2 coats of 522 I use a die grinder with a
fine brass brush on the piece to give it some color. Been finishing pieces
this way for 10 years and still like it.
