Lessee, if you do it in daylight, you're gonna get run over. At night
you're looking for black coal on blacktop. :-)

Well, maybe you could rig up some funnel-like affair from monofilament
net on the hood of your car and just follow the trucks up and down the
road. Sort of like a cross between netting birds and trawling for
fish.
Some time ago, when I needed coal, I called a friend in Cape Breton
(where there are coal mines, including a few back-yard ones). He
reported that when he needs coal, he drives to a particular nearby
place out in the bundoks, scrambles down a bank with a sack and digs.
This is the place where the runoff from a coal-washing plant collected
for decades so its xx feet deep in coal fines.
Considering I'd have to drive 350 miles and then dig and lug, I passed
on the opportunity.
