Any chance the boulder has any natural cracks already?

One way of splitting boulders is to use feathers and wedges.  Tom
Tucker illustrates these in his  book.  The "feather"s are very thin
steel wedges that can be slipped in pairs into existing cracks.  The
"wedge" is a wedge stout enough to hammer on, that is slipped between
the feathers before hammering it home.  The feathers curl outward at
the top so as to make a path for the wedge.  You'd use a series of
these along a crack to expand the crack and split the boulder.
