Yes the core drill is the way to go but it is messy 
Water spraying every were
Not sure about what you are going to put into the holes to expand but
feathers and wedges were the traditional way.  You need a lot of holes and
work your way back and forth driving in the tapered wedge.

diamond core bit.
Rent a drill, the kind with hose hookup for constant water coolant,  
and use a diamond core drill.

Granite can be VERY hard.
