Isn't Seal-All the canonical gas tank repair stuff? (I'm pretty sure
that's the name, comes in a finger-sized tube. I went out to look and
confirm my recollection of the name and was dismayed to find that I
didn't have any in my toolbox.)
You can smear a dab over an actively leaking pinhole and seal it.
For a slightly larger hole and/or more durable repair, stop the active
leak, clean the spot, apply a liberal smear of Seal-All that's bigger
than the hole. Then stick a patch of bedsheet or similar cotton
fabric over it and apply more Seal-All to impregnate the fabric.
Squidge out any bubbles and smooth down the edges. Work quickly as
the stuff skins quickly.
And recall that chain saw gas contains oil so wiping the area
around the hole with lacquer thinner a couple of times is probably
good.
I've seen gas tanks repaired with fiberglass matte and (polyester?)
resin. More careful cleaning.
On a guess, JB Weld might work, too.
Ooop! After I wrote that, CGRAF wrote:

And I'm assuming a metal tank. I never got a good fix on a plastic
tank except by drilling out the hole, putting a bolt with gasketed
washers through the hole and socking the bolt down firmly. Nothing
I've tried will stick to poly[ethyl, propyl]ene.
RELATED QUESTION: (Also OT)
In the 60s and 70s, I used to use Permatex Spray-a-Gasket (Permatex
part #99MA, bright red stuff that we used to call "candy-apple
stickum") to seal gasoline-exposed connections such as filler hoses or
settling bowl gaskets. Worked great, had to use lacquer thinner to
remove it.
In 2006, I did that and the gas simply washed the Permatex away.
Talked to a lab guy at Permatex. He said the formula had never
changed, sent me a free, straight from the factory can. It washes off
easily in gasoline.
Anybody know what happened to Permatex stickum? Or to gasoline, that
it should now dissolve something that it didn't used to? More benzene
in gas now? MMT instead of 4EthylPb conceiveably make a difference?
Grouch.
