this look very much like the lamp that my grandfather had from his
father. my grandfather told me that his father purchased it in the
netherlands for the trip in the stowage compartment of the ship
that they took to get to the u.s.a. . the one my grandfather had was
made of polished brass. had two wicks from a small oil compartment
that could not have held more than 1/4 cup of oil. it was used to
provide a minimal amount of light for the family on the trip. he told
the story that his mother would purchase oil each day from a member of
the crew to ensure that they had oil for the lamp.

the gimbals worked extremely well given that my grandfather's had to be
at least 80 yrs old. i have no idea what happened to the lamp after my
grandfather died.
