Andy,  Note in the chart that the strength values for 1095 are for a 
normalized condition, while the ones for W 1 are for queched and tempered at 
400 F.   The 1095 as shown has a hardness of 285 Brinell while the W 1 has a 
hardness of Rockwell C of 60.  You can convert the Rockwell C of 60 to 
Brinell of about 635 or the Brinell of 285 to a Rockwell C of about 28. 
Tensile Strength is directly related to Brinell, the higher the Brinell the 
higher the tensile strength.  Hard W 1 or 1095 is very strong, and brittle 
as hell.

For most blacksmithing purposes they are the same steel.
