Without being able to put my hands on it I'd assume
it's a project.
The damage to the ram guide is indicative of toggle
link wear bad enough the links are hitting the wrap
around guide. It may be the toggle link arms, a
reasonably easy repair. OR it could be wear in the ram
itself which is a mother bear of a repair.
I like the advice to sk someone you trust who lives
close enough to go take a look for you. That or take a
road trip with a pickup or trailer to breing it home is
it's in satisfactory condition. That's what I did when
I went to check out the 50#LG i just bought, I took the
trailer and all the blocking and rigging I'd need to
bring it home if it was satisfactory. It was and we
did.
For perspective, I paid $4,000 and was happy to get it.
Babbit was new 2 years ago and there's only a little
wobble in the toggle links and that's wear in the ram
head. I've since cleaned and painted it, fabbed a new
motor mount, spring guard and brake. I'm working on the
spray shield and a lower treadle having mounted the
hammer 3 1/2" higher on 4 x 12s.
Now all I need is my welder generator back from the
shop so I can power it. No proper wiring in my shop yet
though this aught to provide incentive.
