Mark: I take it from your post that this hammer is far enough away that you
do not plan on inspecting it before buying. Always risky if you do not know
the owner. The "part" that you describe sounds like a guard installed
sometime in the last 100 years, as no such part originally covered anything
in the LG. Although some insist on such guardds, I do not believe its any
loss if it were removed completely. At the very least, you ought to have
picutures -- closeups -- of this section with the guard off: this is the
business end of the hammer and is critical to condition. While you are at
it, get closeups of the clutch as well.
Assuming all is as represented, 1650 is probably a good price, even if you
have to spend a couple bucks on a motor and belt. In fact, its pretty decent
even if you have to rebuild the thing completely: Consider that the LG
folks now get about 3500 for a rebuilt 25.
Why don't you ask for a few more pics and post them at photoaccess ( at the
link below)?
