Charles has it correct -- I said it backwards.  You want a negative rake 
angle for copper and brass to keep from grabing,

"Back Rake Angle -- If viewed from the side facing the end of the workpiece, 
it is the angle formed by the face of the tool and a line parallel to the 
floor. A positive back rake angle tilts the tool face back, and a negative 
angle tilts it forward and up."

As to sharp vs "dull" the old guys I learned from, would take the sharp tool 
and just break the edge with a very fine stone.   So the tool is sharp but 
with just a slight radius at the tip.  Always worked for me.
