I still can not tell if there is a taper mounting the existing chuck. I 
see no sign that it is keyed in.
  It may just be forged and machined as part of the shaft driving the drill.
At any rate it has defied any attempt to remove it and I am unwilling to 
press the matter further for fear of breaking an otherwise usable tool.

The suggestion has been made to me by several people that I have a 
spindle made to support the new chuck with a straight shaft of 1/2 inch 
to match the existing chuck.
I am probably going to go that route.
