Let me make a suggestion that will improve utility but preserve the
integrity of the machine. I recently acquired a Champion 200 1/2, which
comes equipped with the usual 1/2" set screw chuck. In this chuck, however
was mounted a beautiful vintage Morse chuck on a 1/2" shaft. Although it is
a Morse, the shaft is not a taper but a 1/2" stright shaft. It works as
well as any keyed Jacobs. If you cant happen to find an 1870 Morse , any
Jacobs on a 1/2" straight shaft will do just fine. You may have to shim
slightly to center it, but what the hey, the result, and the preservation of
the original tool is worth it.
