On our house, i welded up brackets of forged 1/2" plate, averaging 18" 
per arm on each side of the beams. The inspector questioned them ( at 
about 200# each, so i showed him that the plans specified Simpsom Strong 
ties on 4X4s and that the members were 12X12"s..That ended the 
conversation..pf
