Terry, Jim and Steve are correct in their admonitions with which I concur
from an empirical perspective.
A used LeBlond in good condition...
The Ocean is unforgiving of inadequate preparation and engineering
execution. Never underestimate the weather, etc... The business advice
appears to be sound also.
Google "Cox's Scapa Flow Fleet", and if you have time, read the book.
Earnest Cox, a British engineer was the greatest junk man ever. He salvaged
the scuttled German fleet in the years following WWI.
Make sure you have the politics and permits all approved by everyone in a
foreign country. In South America we had to get permits and signatures from
Customs, the Harbor Master, the Harbor Patrol, the Police Commissioner, the
Commissioner of Police, the Senior Inspector of Factories and Mines, the
Receiver of Wrecks, the Bureau of Explosives and a host of lower echelon
"officers"; 23 in all, for a small wreck in relatively shallow water.
Our attempt to salvage the wreck of the Warrior in 265' of water off the
north coast of Trinidad set off an international conflict about salvage
rights. It was A US liberty ship on loan to England and sunk by a German sub
during WWII....
I haven't tried forging any of that old "rotten" iron, but I wonder if it
might have an interesting grain pattern when etched or if it would
homogenize by the time it was forged into a billet?
