[TheForge] rust finish

Wayne: Yes, by burnishing or carding, you remove the loose powdery oxides,
which are typically paler in color to your plum. You can augment the
rusting process by moistening the piece with a spray bottle. Rusting occurs
most quickly in warm and humid environments. In the days of soft-soldered
double shotguns, all bluing was done by the "cold rust" process, which
involved an acidic bluing solution and a humid "sweatbox" into which the
plugged barrels were placed. This was a slow process because of the need
for frequent carding to avoid runs. Ironwork is not so exacting and the
longer you can let the rust bite the metal, the better. This action can be
augmented with some white vinegar in the water spray. Be patient
Grant

thanks Grant. I was talking to a guy in town today about Permalac.
As a matter of fact, he has 5 gallons he found in his storeroom, tho'
he doesn't carry it anymore. I told him to hold it for me, but I was
wanting to find some more information on how well this would work. By
burnish, you mean just brush the hell out of it? Do you need to apply
a deactivating agent. Also would Permalac work well with an airless
sprayer? Thanks for jumping in here, as my client is indicating that
this is how he wants it to go. He feels that this mottled rusted look
is more "authentic". :-)
