Frosty: S series are good for anything that needs to be shock-resistant.
Some folks use the S series for hotwork tooling, though that is sort of an
"off label" use. S-1 is oil hardening, while S-7 is air hardening...I don't
know about S-2. The S series are made more toward toughness than
hardness. Might make a good hammer or cold work tooling. Grant

bar stock but doesn't know what it's good for and I
told him I'd ask around. He's a smith so general and
specific info will be useful.
