I agree with your friend Charlie. You can probably find a crane company to pick the load for $350 to $450 depending on the reach. You can spend that much money just purchasing the planks. And even then it's a hassle keeping them from shifting and not cracking.
The expanded metal would probably just buckle and get forced down into the mud. You would need solid steel plates and some way to move them.
Save the man power for setting the pavers and not moving the pallets.
