Hi Bob
Sort of a warped corollary to stippling is 'golf balling'. In another
life I raced motorcycles... or tried to at least.
In an effort to improve the engines we used to port the 2 stroke pistons
and then 'golf ball' the piston skirts by drilling pock marks into them
to reduce the contact area in a effort to reduce the drag of the piston.
This was accomplished by pecking the surface with a drill, not to raise
the surrounding area as in stippling but to reduce the amount of metal
in contact with the cylinder wall and help hold oil. Don't know if it
helped win any races, but they looked cool.
I have used stippling on a competition pistol for both
decoration/practical use on the front and back strap of the grip, and
functionally on the slide surface of the frame to reduce the side play.
I used an automatic center punch and a lot of patience to stipple the
grips. I also hid my initials in the stippling. Sort of my version of
steganography.
