Andy, the only book I have found that really covers this subject is a
self published book by an old welder.
I am not sure its available any more- I think I actually bought it
direct from the author.
its called "Distortion Control" by John P. Stewart.
It does have an ISBN number, you might be able to find it used on
Amazon or Abebooks.

Its ISBN 0-9692845-3-5

He also wrote another interesting book , on Flame Straightening.

He used to advertise in the welding mags, in the 80's and early 90's,
and you would send him a check at his home address.

I am wondering if he is still with us.

I have a couple feet of shelf space of conventional welding books, and
none of em cover either of these subjects with more than a paragraph.

Would anyone like to suggest a good metal fab book that discusses
controlling distortion due to cooling welds?
I've been doing it on the fly for some years now, I bet there's a
world of
better techniques than what I use.
Thanks for any ideas!
