One advantage of the spelter socket termination is that it has it's own
anode for corrosion protection.
We used a galvanized steel closed end socket for our wire rope terminations
that was swaged with a 200 ton die press. The wire to socket junction was
covered by a waterproof urethane boot for corrosion protection. Since they
were used in current meter arrays, and we had to make up several hundred per
operation, this technique was much faster and not subject as much, to human
error.
