[TheForge] Fw: lubricants and hydraulics

Terry, The answer is to pick one of the major oil companies line of
lubricants and hydraulic oils and use it in everything that falls within
that API and/or SAE spec and rating. They all list their ratings on the
container. (I am not suggesting that this means that you the same oil in a
hydraulic system and a gear box -- unless the gear box is designed for that.
Some tractors are designed this way.)

Manufactures list the required spec in their full service manuals. If you
don't have one of these check on line or go to your local dealer and look it
up.

Large industrial companies such as I used to work for have their own
internal standards set up by engineers and lubrication specialists. In
Alcoa we had a system we call the ML system for Machinery Lubricants. We
then assigned the correct lubricant or hydraulic oil for each machine, gear
box etc. Our purchasing department then when out with specifications and
purchased to these specs and the incoming oils were assigned and mark with
the correct ML number. The craftsmen in the plants then knew which oil to
put in which machine etc. You can do something similar for you own
equipment by cross referencing the manufactures specifications to API and
SAE specs.
