We did the classic adjustable swing arm treadle hammer. It was the easier design at the time to build. There were 5 of us and we made a extra 6th one for the club shop. My contribution of labor was drilling most of the holes and making sure they lined up in the 6 treadle hammers. When your gang building something, it's easier if all the material for each thing is uniform with each other. This means buying stock materials and that costs. If you're building an one-off item for yourself, you're a lot more free to scrounge for cheaper materials. I'm really happy with my treadle hammer.
