How to have a coal forge/power hammer in a subdivision:

All my neighbors have good ironwork.

As far as I can see (if you can get hold of it at a decent price) the main
downside is it's lack of calorific value; you'll get through it a lot
quicker. The smiths I've seen using it seem to have a routine of putting
their steel back into the fire and putting on another handful of charcoal
each time.

Thanks for all the positive feedback regarding the discussion of coal,
charcoal or propane. Because of all the suggestions from members I'm
switching to charcoal for the following reasons: accessibility to quality
fuel, lack of noxious smoke, and one comment from an ABANA member made the
most impact by far...not having to "constantly be dicking with the fire".
It seems that charcoal has nearly every property that coal lacks. Cleaner
burning, readily available, less problems with forge welding......granted
there's poppers and flyers from the fire occasionally. Now, someone talk me
out of using charcoal and convince me to use something else. Again, thanks
for the feedback. It's great to hear from blacksmiths in residential
areas!!!!
