Argonne National Laboratory researchers develop new corrosion-resistant
metal alloys.
The Chicago Tribune (9/15) reports that "corrosion-resistant metal alloys
that could be used in high-temperature, high-pressure environments such as
oil refineries and chemical-processing plants have been developed by
researchers at Argonne National Laboratory." Argonne researcher Ken Natesan
and his colleagues "found that corrosion attacks materials in ways
previously unsuspected." Researchers said that if the new alloys "go on to
commercial applications," they "could save such industries hundreds of
millions of dollars annually." The project was "funded by the federal
Department of Energy." According to the Tribune, "Argonne partnered with the
Materials Technology Institute Inc. (MTI), a St. Louis-based cooperative
research and development consortium of private industry. After Argonne
researchers produced several grams of new alloys in their labs, MTI
scientists scaled that up to make a 50-pound alloy ingot, which is
undergoing tests." The Tribune notes that "scientists looked at alloys at
the molecular level by using nanobeam X-rays from Argonne's Advanced Photon
Source. They also used a magnetic-force microscope and a scanning electron
microscope at Argonne to confirm their findings."
