The best potential idea I've seen, and I hate so very much to admit it,
comes from Bruce Freeman. He devised a "steerable" intake that could be
moved at will to whatever location is most convenient for the smith.
The details needed some tuning, but the basic idea is sound and I think
it would be a very good solution to the occasional problem of a hood
being in the way of the more ideal position of work in the fire. One
thing I greatly dislike about side draft hoods is when it is in the way
of how I want to place the work in the fire. Top draft hoods generally
work like crap - they suck because they don't suck.
