[TheForge] How large a generator?

I have a 7KW generator from Home Depot. It provides power to the
main panel so that everything has power but we are selective in what we
knowinly use. The furnace - not AC -, submersible well pump, two 3/4 hp sump
pumps, 3 television sets and normal lighting have been no problem for
several years. We lose power semi regularly here and have been on emergency
power for well over 12 hours at a time. I probably could run one surface
burner on the electric range but we use the microwave usually. I also power
the ham radios and computers without incident.

I have a Lincoln Ranger 9 welder generator that' puts out 9 or 10kw. I
forget. It's plenty to run the house including well start up from 200' down.
It makes a difference. It isn't very fuel efficient though and uses a little
better than 1gl/hr under a moderate load.
It will run the lathe, 220v @ 50amp. but lugs at startup.
I wouldn't go any less than 30kw diesel and 40kw's probably better. Not
having enough juice at startup is really hard on electricals, motors,
electronics, even lights don't like it.
What happened to the hydroelectric, the crick freeze in winter?
