I agree about heating to a dull red. In my experience, quenching is optional. After heating, I have found that you can work it while it's still warm; you can set aside to cool then work it; or you can quench and then work it. It doesn't seem to make much difference. But, that may not be true with all types of brass, so YMMV.

Not sure about brass but to clean copper we use HTH brand PH minus from
Walmart.
Mix the powder with hot water and let soak in plastic bucket.
Did you anneal while making the bell
I bought a few shells and was thinking about doing some trench art with them
like I do copper pipe. Anyone have suggestions on annealing?

What is the quickest way to clean tarnish off a brass 90mm cannon shell? I
made a bell out of it and would like to shine it up, but Brasso hardly
touched it.
