If you want to immerse it, add table salt to white vinegar
(proportions not critical), with a little dishwashing detergent to cut
any grease present, and soak as long as necessary, immerse the shell,
and check it every few hours. Don't be dismayed when it turns
pinkish-copper colored. When you polish it, the pinkish copper will
polish off and leave brass.

If immersing is impractical, then mix equal parts salt, white vinegar,
and white flour, varying liquid-to-flour ratio to give a paste that
doesn't run. Smear this liberally over the shell, then wrap with
plastic to prevent drying. Check after several hours. In this case
it's better to degrease thoroughly first.

This kind of tarnish removal works excellently on mild tarnish, like
your typical tarnished copper penny. If the tarnish has progressed to
verdi gris, it will be slow at best.
