Mitch, If described as chrome moly nickel, I would say that you have a 4340
steel. This would be a common high performance high strength steel. Heat
treated it would take the teeth off a hack saw. This will make good tools
It also might be a steel like 8620 and case hardened. This would also be a
steel that is next to impossible to saw through but will have a low carbon,
softer core. Will make OK tools in some cases but not as good as the 4340.
8620 also contains moly. I have seen very good tongs made from 8620.
Just try it. For many tools all you need to do is forge it and let it air
cool. Then see how it works as a tool.
By the way, what did you do with the bikes?
