My biggest fear would be damaging the stone. If you can drill out the stubs
(You don't state the size around or up) or if the lead is large enough use
a holesaw to cut the lead. Use a piece of plywood with the holesaw hole in
it, center over the stud, stand on wood and core out the lead cleaning the
saw a lot. If it is not too deep this will free the stubs or allow prying a
bit. I might make new legs for the whole piece (Haven't seen it) rather
than have a weld at the stress point. You can repour the lead or pack with
lead wool and it will age quickly as compared to trying to fix the stone.
Let the air out of the contractors tires if he revisits the job site, make
the house happy
