[TheForge] 1045 Steel (?)

Dan, 

I drew a spike out to abt 1/4" x 1" and quenched in water @ a red heat. Put
it in the vice and hit it with a hammer and it snapped. I didn't think 30
pts would do that. There must be some other alloy in the mix?

Dann,
Spec data sheet for "HC" spikes say 30 pts. carbon Max.
Which makes them mild steel.
