About 25 years ago the last of our neighborhood elms finally succumbed to
the Dutch Elm Disease. I was able to pick up three nice boles about two feet
across from the road crews. I didn't have a truck at the time and really
struggled getting them into and out of my car trunk. Took three trips...they were
big and the trunk was small. But they would make great anvil stumps. I was
really tickled to get them. I set them aside to dry and age. One Saturday about
six months later my 14 year old son came in from the back yard sweating like
a pig. "Hey, Dad", he says, "I finally got those three old stumps of wood
split up into little pieces for you. Boy were they tough!"
I was really stumbling for words but finally was ablt to get out how much I
appreciated it and that they would burn great this coming winter. So it goes.
