I'm not sure, not really being an expert or even doingmuch flame cutting but
I get the feeling that using too big a nozzle might carry the heat away too
quickly - maybe because the gas flow is too high? I certainly find it easier
to cut 1/4 plate with the right size nozzle than with the one designed for

Lynn -
There is no reason you cannot burn sheet metal with a larger tip. The
only reasons I can think of to use a smaller tip are:
- lower fuel consumption
- smaller kerf
- smaller heat effected zone
These may be very valid reasons for using the smaller tip, but if you're
not cutting lots of sheet and if kerf dimension is not critical, then I
see no reason not to have to go to the smaller tip. I can remember
watching Parker Bohn very expertly burn some galvanized corrugated sheet
with his normal large-sized torch. No problems. Of course, he was a
super expert welder/cutter. :)
