[TheForge] building a fence

You're right about the horses and I've seen the gate trick.
I have a mare, though, that is so scared of the electric fence that I often use old bale twine strung onto temporary posts of any kind. Works until the nighttime dew stretches the twine so far that it's laying on the ground and she accidentally crosses it while she's grazing.
Makes for easy fencing when you only have to run a single strand of aluminum wire with T posts at 40'. I tie 1" plastic strips cut from white trash bags on it every few feet so she can see the wire. If only the deer would quit running through it.

I know it was a typo but I like the term "Bounder
Collie" we have one who went blind at about two years
old. They're too smart for the average owner, they
really need a job to keep them out of trouble.
Outsmarting fencing isn't only for dogs, we raised
horses many years ago and everything was fine and
dandy. Then a mare learned how to unlatch gates and
taught all the other horses. Next she discovered the
electric fence hums when it's on so she'd stand there
and listen to it waiting for it go silent. Then she'd
test with a couple quick touches of her nose and if
nothing happened make her break. We'd stand in the tack
room and watch through the window, usually the third
touch of the nose was a long one and that's when we'd
plug the fence charger back in.
Didn't do a thing for unlatching gates though.
