Cleaning a watch is usually removing the balance wheel and hairspring,
checking it for defects, then dunking the works, which have been removed
from the case, into the ultrasonic cleaner, special cleaning fluid, then
to a drying station, lubricated with special oil, wheel and spring
replaced and the verge adjusted, timed and then it is back to
you...$100.00 if no parts are needed......
Older pocket watches were not meant to be carried in your pocket, vest
with the proper attire required, they were not shock proof.
If it is a mantle, or floor clock I remove the works, check all
bushings, and completely dismantle the works, replace bushings as needed
then clean in the ultrasonic, dry, reassemble, adjust and time.
Considering shop rates you can probably guess at the cost....This is
with not replacing any parts.

My good pocket watch has died. The repairman says it just needs
cleaning. Unfortunately cleaning would be $100. The watch may be
worth $125. Where should be some way that I could clean and oil it
myself. The repairman says that the watch was designed to be cleaned
and adjusted every six months. I think that means that there should
be an easy way to clean and oil this peice of "fine" smithwork.
