What is done is high Voltage capacitors of high quality are charged up.
Large capacitors. Then they are discharged quickly into a turn of wire
that usually disintegrates due to the power induced. But before it
disintegrates it generates a large magnetic field that causes the coin
to shrink in diameter.

We use the same circuit when we magnetize magnets, just to a smaller
degree.

Danger. Besides the high Voltages, the capacitors used are of such a
quality that a lethal charge can be achieved merely by dry air gently
blowing across the terminals. I've seen it happen. Didn't kill anyone,
but scared the britches off of me. I was double checking one before
picking it up. It had not been properly terminated before shipping.
They are terminated by shorting the terminals with a section of wire.

Surplus Sales of Nebraska has some good quality capacitors. You can
pick up capacitors to store a megajoule of energy relatively cheaply.
If you have a fork lift<G>.

Yesterday I did a quick search and ran across lots of
URLs about coin shrinking and that one came up #1.
Looks like fun but seeing as I'm no less clueless about
electronics than last time I was intrigued I'll
probably stick with the, "Ooh cool!" crowd.
