[TheForge] coal or charcoal

Mmmmmmm . . . I don'y think its as simple as a mechanical filtering process.
If that were the only problem, fresh oil would constantly dissolve the
heavier compounds as it flowed through the wick, particularly with the heat
of the burner. In a center draft lamp, the paraffin compounds seem to
undergo a chemical change as well that is not amenable to physical
dissolution. I havce tried soakng a clogged wick in kero, but the hardest
part -- right up near the top of the burner -- still had to be trimmed away.
It was like a very hard wax or plastic. I believe copper can actually
catalyse a polymerization of certain of the heavier hydrocarbons. I have
not determined whether this happens with vegetable oil, but I will know in a
few days. We are undertaking a major tool derusting project over the next
couple of weeks. Veggie fuel comes right after that. Then on to biomass
pyrolization and gasification.
I'll post progress here regularly. Just got 5 gallons of Evaporust
delivered and can't wait to get get some ferricoxide into it.
