When I say "second rate", I mean mainly as an economy. The
single-minded push towards a "service economy" is, IMO a very dangerous
deal. Good examples of how disastrous globalization is likely to be can
be seen in the many smaller "backwater" nations who have taken the
IMF/Worldbank bait of money in trade for low interest rates on the
condition that they accept and implement economic "restructuring". Were
I the paranoid type, I would be well tempted to think that restructuring
was an attempt at destroying the self-sufficiency of nations, one at a
time. Nations like Jamaica and Haiti, which were at one time poor but
self sufficient in the basics such as providing their own food, have
been severely devastated by IMF restructuring. In some of those places
it became *illegal* to grow one's own food! Rather, farmers were forced
to abandon their traditional crops and grow those that were for export
only. The nation is in turn forced to now import food from abroad in
order to feed itself. Evil conspiracy? Possibly, but just as likely
(perhaps more so) the machinations of men who are attempting to shove
globalization down the world's throat. The US economy is so
staggeringly large and powerful that the ill effects don't show for a
long time. If we devolve into what will effectively be a service
economy, I think we will be set up for serious trouble in the future.
