Bob,

All you need is a DC power source. I disagree with another post as to
how a manual torch (valve to let gas thru on the torch head) is a PITA.
It's like turning water on and off . Sure, you will damage your
tungsten if you light up without gas. I use this setup exclusively and
do a lot of tig welding . I'm a pretty good welder and still have to
sharpen plenty of tungsten. You don't need a foot pedal to regulate
amperage, just set your heat at the machine and adjust up or down based
on what you are welding (different thicknesses, materials etc) Tig is
welded with strait polarity so the ground is positive, torch negative.
Argon gas, approx.20lb pressure on your regulator. Piece of cake. I
learned how to tig weld building and repairing boilers in the field. We
didn't weld with pedals etc. On a big job we were lucky if they had
remote rheostats to change our heat without running to our machine and
back if we were switching from tig to stick etc. I believe there is a
mystique about tig welding, that it's specialized so it's harder than
other forms of welding. Like anything else you want master, it just
takes time and practice.
