I just finished a rebar staircase (toprail and balusters are 1-3/4";
everything else a combo of 3/8 to 3/4 rebar), total feet of the
staircase is about 50 feet. I waxed it hot with beeswax.
What a mess! A word to anyone who is thinking about waxing a large
project, put something under the project to catch the excess wax. Hot
wax gets into every crack and crevasse, which is good for the project,
but if it drops on your work table or the floor, that's another issue.
I finally wound up using cardboard refrigerator boxes under my stuff as
I heated w/ an acetylene/oxygen rosebud. Bar as big as this stays hot
for a LONG time, so be careful. I used the better part of 2 lbs of beeswax.
A part of this railing is upstairs on top of a commercial building (it
is a 2nd floor loft living space in an old warehouse) and is always in
the weather. Unless the client allows that portion to be painted, I
will have that section powder coated. So far, he has said no to paint.
