It also makes (fairly) sure that the wax reaches crevices such as
forge welded joins in foliage, deep undercuts in animal heads or
riveted lap joints. The downside is that runnels of excess wax may
accumulate in those crevices and turn to whitish scum. But it's easier
to fix that up with a tooth brush or similar than to deal with later
rust pockets in those same crevices.
