I think this is exactly what Andy is talking about with
alignment problems and the need for a self aligning
coupler or whatever it was. (stinkin CRS!)
In all the years I worked drill rigs, earthmoving
equipment and the like I've never seen a hydraulic
component mounted truly solidly, they're always
mounted with room for adjustment and some slack.
The self contained hammers take care of the problem by
using the piston and cylinder as the guides. The ones
I've taken a look at anyway. There are square cylinder
rams available so it might be a possible solution for a
modern utility hammer.
How was it taken care of in the age of steam? Were they
so large it wasn't a factor? Different coupling system?
. . . ?
