Its probably the adjustment of the switch that automatically turns off  
the bandsaw.
The switch is turning off the saw before it cuts all the way thru.
You can bend the little tab on the frame, the one that pushes the  
switch off, so that it waits a bit longer before doing so.
There is usually also a bolt, with a nut on it to lock it in position,  
back close to the pivot point, on the opposite side from the motor.  
This bolt is the stop for downward travel, and can be adjusted to make  
sure the blade stops below the level of the table, not above.
A decent bandsaw, like a  jet or Grizzly, comes with a manual that  
shows these parts.

The bolt in question is "B" in Fig. 17 on page 12.

square up the end, frequently the short piece will get folded under, and
not completely cut off. What adjustment, setting, procedure do I have
wrong?

The speed is 120 fpm, cutting mild steel, and the blade is a Lennox
Diemaster2 14 T.
