I just went out and measured a piece of leftover screen.

Just for a reference point, the last fire screen I made (traded for a
root canal job) used stainless, 0.030" wire, 6 mesh (i.e. 6 squares to
the inch).


In retrospect, that mesh might be a little coarse if you're burning
wood that tends to explode  lots of tiny sparks, especially if you
have expensive carpets.  Eight or even 10 to the inch might be better.
