Be REALLY careful about using field stone, if it has 
internal moisture it can explode dangerously. Never use 
stone from a lake, stream or wet ground. Make sure the 
bottom of your firepit has a drain, water caught in it 
will potentially soak into the stone and become 
shrapnel.

I like brick myself. Of course plastering the inside 
with a refractory cement will take care of steam 
explosions so long as you don't build fires to huge 
scale.

Find a mason with experience building firepits and 
places for advice even if it costs you. Exploding 
stones have been known to kill people even some 
distance away.
