Ive been using one of the "wired" intercom systems for years. Wired 
because it uses the existing power lines that I ran to the shop. As long 
as the shop and house are fed from the same main it will work. There are 
also wireless ones that are similar to baby monitors. The key thing to 
the intercoms is there is a call button that makes a loud annoying 
series of deetels that can be heard over most anything. The wireless 
ones are a bit more expensive but too much so..
