And on a completely unrelated topic, anybody got any great projects that
use just the pointy end of the spike ;')

As far as the question at hand, here are some off the wall suggestions,
the first of which is the most practical for me:

1) Cut them off and use a stud welder to weld a threaded stud to them.
I have an old Omark stud welder I haven't used in ten years, but it was
pretty fast when I used it last. Don't know if oe of these cheap HF
stud guns can handle a large enough diameter, but you may be able to
rent one or job it out to someone that has one.

2) Take a pipe flange of appropriate size and bolt to your drill press
table. Take a short nipple and turn the threads off of one end. Screw
it into the flange. Turn the threads off of a pipe cap so it is a a
sliding fit on nipple now mounted on drill press table. Place it on the
nipple and drill a hole in the center of the pipe cap, remove it and
file hole square to fit spike shaft. Weld a handle on it. Fill nipple
on drill press table with lead shot, or coarse sand. Place cutoff
spike in pipe cap and place on nipple. Drill. If you have a tapping
head, tap them in the same fixture.

3) Take several RTV molds and cast them in pewter with a threaded
thimble in the mold. Easier to take care of in the end for the homeowner.

4) Chuck the pointy end in a four jaw on the lathe and turn a stud on
them, thread the stud, would go pretty fast if you have the right tooling.
