any guidance on how to determine what one should resonably ask? 

What has worked for me and the other guy who does this with me is to do the event for free but have items for sale.  The event pays nothing and we get whatever items are good enough to sell.  I also routinely make the little bitty horseshoes for kids as they watch.  They love getting something they actually saw being made.  Then they tell other kids who bring their parents over to see.  Cheap, easy and instantly effective advertising.  Good luck.
