Looks like I'm back!
There isn't anyhting particularly chain-making around the forge. It is a
standard British village forge, really - two side blown brick built hearths,
one still on hand bellows, the other converted to an electric blower.
As I said, the last smith was a hoarder and if he saw something that was
used for chainmakinf he'd definitely have had it away!

Two of the three smiths replying to my inquiry on the Anvilfire forum came
up with the same answer without prompting. I sent the link to the photos,
and two smiths replied within minutes: "chainmakers helper".

None of the explanations I heard really accounted for all of the
characteristics of the beast.
