I thought I read that it took a 1,000 seeds to get anything from these.

Yup; They were my first attempt at psychedelics and i was 
psychedelically nauseated for a full 8 hours...once.. Back in the early 60s.
It teams up with poison oak (and sometimes berry vines), in impenetrable 
masses on steep slopes sometimes. You can wallow over the top, sorta, 
going down hill. Going up hill through it is an unpleasant grunt.
